Will US/Canadian customs or security at the airport search my laptop’s contents?
I am travelling to the US from Canada. I am a United States citizen. I am bringing my laptop, which has sensitive material. Has anyone ever been in my position recently and had their laptop’s content searched? What should I expect?
I have encrypted my sensitive files, but I worry that their EnCase forensic software can get around this. Should I just ship my laptop ahead of time?
What I’m really curious about is if anyone else has come into the US from Canada recently (especially if they are a US citizen) and had their laptop’s content searched.
They claim the right to do so (as well as claiming the right to copy your hard drives contents and look through anything on it).
When it comes to your sensitive files, they can ask you for the encryption keys and if you don’t give them they can refuse you entry into the US. Your best bet would be to bring a laptop that doesn’t have anything you wouldn’t want to get in the hands of uncle Sam and have the sensitive files downloaded from Canada when you arrive in the states (and then delete them from the laptop when you travel back to Canada).
