is there work for illustrator?
I’m graphic design student and I’m taking illustrator class not the program) just wondering is there work out there for illustrator and how much to they make an average.
You really can’t find a pay rate, “on average.” For one thing, very few illustrators are employees of the publications for which they provide graphics. There are only so many newpapers and magazines that can afford full time artists.
Most illustrators in the business are either frelancers, or part time contractors for publisher. They are given assignments from the publisher’s art director, based on the current need. A magazine may plan to publish an article about travel in the Northwester US, so the art director may call on one artist whose work is familiar and of the style the director wants. Same may be true for a book publisher. The pay rate will depend on several factors, such as the publication’s circulation, complexity of the graphic, and many other things, not the least of which is the publication’s ability to pay.
A detailed anatomical drawing of a polar bear’s brain in National Geographic will pay a LOT more than a map of a local department store’s parking lot.
I recommend you purchase a copy of the book titled, “Artist’s and Writer’s Market.” It is published by the Graphic Artist’s Guild and is full of information on how to best market your work. It also includes a very good list of publications that are known to buy work from artists. They also provide the names and contact information of the individuals you should approach.
Good luck.

Diego Rivera: Great Illustrator $60 Best known for his epic mural production, Mexican artist Diego Rivera was also an important easel painter and–as this book eloquently demonstrates–an extraordinary illustrator. This volume takes a detailed and long-overdue look at this rich and significant facet of Rivera’s immense oeuvre: the illustrations he contributed to books and periodical publications over the course of his long career. Accompanying the numerous reproductions is a long and splendidly researched essay by noted art critic Raquel Tibol, an expert on the artist’s work. The panorama of Rivera’s themes–Modernist poetry, political issues, Mexican folklore, pre-Columbian America and many others–take the reader on a tour of the history of Mexican art in the first half of the twentieth century. Even those who think they know Rivera’s work will find new aspects to explore in this beautiful book. |
